
Since the 2010s Billboard hits have referenced 1980s popular music. These stylistic attributes include specific instrumentation and audio edited effects that make 1980s popular music what it is. Due to the influence from American popular music, Thai popular music today follows many of the same traits and trends. Building on Alissa Stolt's thesis, "Visualizing 1980's Timbres" and Eamsa-ard Lamnao's thesis, "Thai Popular Music: The Representation of National Identities and Ideologies within a Culture in Transition." This poster assesses the similarities between American 1980s popular music and Thai popular music, using songs by Jekd as a case study.
While Billboard hits have received much scholarly attention in recent years, not as much research is being done within Asian popular music and its influences from American popular music. Thai popular music, or Pleng Thai Sakon, has a rich history and influence from American popular music, which accelerated during the Cold War due to the heavy presence of American soldiers (Lamnao 2006). Jekd is an up-and-coming Thai artist who began releasing music around 2018, and whose writing style contains obvious influences from contemporary and 1980s American popular music. Using timbre charts, spectrogram analysis, and lyric analysis, this poster ultimately confirms how Jekd references this musical era in his music.
